How often should I use the VocalMist?
For maximum effect use the VocalMist 15 minutes before singing, and then immediately after singing. You can also use the VocalMist any time your voice feels dry or your sinuses are uncomfortable. If needed, you can use several times a day with no adverse effects.
How/when should I clean my VocalMist?
After each daily use remove the cap, empty any residual fluid, and allow the unit to totally air dry. Generally speaking, this is all you need to do to keep your VocalMist clean!
Full disinfection is only needed if there is visibile buildup within the saline cup. For full disinfection, rinse external and internal areas of saline capsule with lukewarm/slight hot water (Below 40°C). Fill saline cup with 3 parts purified water and 1 part distilled white vinegar, and nebulize solution to completion. Rinse the capsule with water and let air dry. Do not reuse cleaning solution. Do not touch metal mesh during cleaning.
Mask and mouthpiece can be cleaned with hot water and dish soap.
Why is this better than other nebulizers?
Most nebulizers are designed for medication, so they are optimized for breathing in an exact dosage. This means that the rate of nebulization is slowed so that the user breathes in a consistent, full dosage of a medication without waste. However, the VocalMist, as a non-medical nebulizer, is intended to bring as much hydration to your vocal tract as possible as quickly as possible. For this reason, we have turned up the nebulization rate to levels above what a standard nebulizer will do, and it is partially for this reason that the VocalMist has the hydrating effects it provides for singers. As of 2024, we are also using a brand new type of ultrasonic nebulizing mechanism that suffers less performance degradation over time.
The VocalMist is USB-rechargeable, whereas cheaper nebulizers are often either AA battery powered or must be hooked up to a wall socket.
We sometimes hear from customers who purchased cheaper nebulizers that they often break and then must be replaced multiple times. Sometimes, a well-made product is worth a few extra dollars for consistency's sake. Also, our instructional materials, videos, and customer support are all geared towards optimum outcomes for voice users. We are here as a resource to make sure that vocalists are getting the results they need, and that they are using the product in that most effective way for those goals.
Can I fly with my VocalMist?
There are no issues flying with your VocalMist, both in checked or carry-on baggage.
VocalMist uses small, non-removable lithium-ion batteries (2.4 Wh). Travel restrictions only apply to much larger lithium batteries.
You will be glad to know that it is also fine to bring your Hydration Formula capsules in your carry-on baggage.
For both domestic and international flights, TSA's rules permit liquids to be included in your carry-on bags, so long as each liquid vial is under 3.4 ounces (or 100ml), and the entirety of your liquids are placed in a quart-sized bag. Hydration Formula units are each only 5ml, easily passing this requirement.
To avoid confusion, you can carry your capsules in the original box (featuring ingredient information), and/or put your capsules in a plastic bag to expedite the TSA process.

Why should I use Hydration Formula in my VocalMist?
The Science shows that nebulizing isotonic saline can measurably reduce the pressure needed to bring your vocal folds together and phonate, making singing feel easier than before nebulizing. Isotonic saline can also help remove mucus and allergens from your nasal cavity, and reduce post nasal drip.
Nebulizing VocalMist Hydration Formula has been shown to help hydrate your vocal tract and nasal cavities, as well as reduce the perception of effort spent singing/speaking.
Can I buy/use other saline with VocalMist?
"Saline" is a catch-all term describing many blends of water with various salts. Our saline is particular for the needs of our customers, as it is medical-grade "isotonic" saline. This means that our saline (Hydration Formula) uses exactly 0.9% NaCl, with pure water and no other ingredients.
This percentage of NaCl exactly matches what your body does naturally, and so it is the perfect hydration tool for absorption into your vocal folds. Our saline is also manufactured in sterile, single use vials, so it is safe to breathe with no adverse effects.
Please note that other saline products may contain several different salts in various proportions, and do not work effectively for hydration (they may actually hurt you!). Sterile isotonic saline is the only safe thing to use in your VocalMist.
Can I use essential oils in my VocalMist?
No. Using oils in your nebulizer may permanently damage your unit. However, if you put a drop or two of oil onto a bit of napkin and place in your face mask, you may enjoy the result!
Can VocalMist be used for medical purposes?
Some doctors and ENTs direct their patients to use the VocalMist for medical goals under doctor supervision. However, we cannot give medical advice here. Please consult with your doctor for any medical treatments and before using anything other than VocalMist Hydration Formula in your device.
Do not use the Hydration Formula if you have a salt allergy, and consult with a doctor before use if you have any respiratory illnesses to consider.
Can I use anything other than VocalMist Hydration Formula in my VocalMist?
Your unit is designed only for use with VocalMist Hydration Formula (isotonic saline) and using any other substances, unless prescribed by a doctor, can be extremely dangerous. Please respect your health with this product!
My VocalMist is not working properly. What gives?
Possible solutions:
- Make sure that your unit is properly charged, and charged using a powered USB port.
- Check to make sure you are using VocalMist Hydration Formula (isotonic saline) in your device, as it is not endorsed to work with other substances.
- Occasionally, liquid may accumulate inside the nozzle of the device, and a slight shake will free the metal mesh to properly nebulize.
- Detach the removable saline cup (via white button on the back) to expose the gold pin connectors on the bottom of the cup. Check that the gold pins have not become compressed into the cup, as they must be fully extended to make electrical contact with the body of the device. If any pins are compressed, manually adjust them to full extension.
- Inspect the gold pins mentioned above, as well as their counterpart circle connectors on the battery side of the VocalMist. If you see any discoloration or corrosion on these electrical connector pieces, please remove the corrosion by scraping the connectors with something thin and metallic (like the end of a paperclip) so that the shining metallic surface is exposed to best facilitate electrical connection. When finished, firmly reattach the saline cup onto the body of the VocalMist.
- The spray mesh may have occasional buildup, inhibiting the atomization. You can drop 2 or 3 drops of white vinegar into the medication cup with 3-6mL lukewarm water, and then fully atomize the resulting solution. Do not inhale the atomization, rinse the saline cup with water afterwards, and let it air dry before next use.
